NCAA Bracketology: Is Pitt Getting Close To A Bubble Spot?
With a fourth straight win, the NCAA tournament bubble talk will continue to gain steam and for good reason. After beating Georgetown, it was a bit early, but now we're at four wins since Tray Woodall's return. My contention is still that 21 games gets them in.
Now, with seven games left, we're still a while away from seeing how this plays out. But having won four straight now, Pitt is getting into good position and it's hard to ignore.
It's mostly meaningless, but I still follow Joe Lunardi's Bracketology on ESPN. Obviously, Pitt hasn't been anywhere near it since losing eight in a row, but that could change. I'll be interested to see where Pitt comes out in his rankings this week. Who knows if he'll put the Panthers in his bracket, but last week, he had a then 15-8 West Virginia team with a five seed. Pitt is 15-9 with the win on Saturday and beat the Mountaineers in Morgantown this week.

The way it appears to be shaking out
Is that we need to beat Seton Hall to take their bubble spot since we lost against Notre Dame and Cincy. It would also help to take 2/3 from WVU, Uconn & the Ville
Bees Bees Everywhere
20 wins
I think is still the magic number. If they get 20, with Woodall’s injury, I will call Pitt safe for the tourny. Anything less, and they have to win the BE tournament. I think the next 2 games against South Florida and Seton Hall are absolute must wins. If they can get those 2 wins and improve to 6-7 in the BE, then my mind will go towards the “bubble.”
I know Pitt won’t be a high enough seed this year to do it, but its unfortunate that Pitt wasn’t having a typical year where they would be given a top 3 seed in the tourny, because the first round is being played in Pittsburgh this year. If Pitt was a #1 or #2 seed, they would most certainly give Pitt the Consol Energy Center. Just imagine that place if Pitt played there and how crazy it would be. The CEC would turn into the Zoo!
Well
If Pitt does something ridiculous like win out and go on a run in the BET, they could get an 8/9 and still get to play in the Pete. Not exactly the same thing as a No. 1 seed, but playing at home would be sweet. I doubt they’d do that to a potential No. 1 seed, though, forcing them to play virtually a true road game in the second round if Pitt happened to win the 8/9 game.

Games are at the CEC
Not the Pete. Pitt wouldn’t be able to play there if the first round was at the Pete

Right
That’s why I said ‘virtual’ home game. Playing downtown is pretty much the same thing as getting a home game.

Ya, you are right
Pitt is definitely still in the running for an 8/9 seed, but as you said, there is no way they will match up a 1 seed in a potential second round game against Pitt at the CEC. Ohh man, just imagine if they DID plan NCAA tourny games at home.
CEC
I saw them play at Mellon Arena about ten years ago the last time the tourney was here. Pretty cool getting to root for Pitt as they made the Sweet 16.

Not there yet
As of right now Lunardi has Pitt ranked at 86 (18 spots off making the tourney), though they are rising fast, and he says that he thinks they will make the tourney this year.
Also with this year’s setup for the NCAA it would have been tough for Pitt to get a home game at the CEC. There is no session in the Northeast, and Ohio St can’t play in Columbus so Pitt would have had to been rated higher than Syracuse and Ohio St to play here. Anybody heading down to those sessions here in Pittsburgh can expect to see those two teams.
That's good insight and knowledge
Thanks, friend -
