Jamie Dixon appears to have settled on his starting lineup and rotation as shown in the exhibition game against Slippery Rock.
* James Robinson starts at PG and is spelled by Josh Newkirk. This was expected. Newkirk, is pretty raw but has time to get better not having played a real D1 game yet. In the exhibitions he put up a bit too many shots but, again, needs some time to find a groove. I would imagine the 3rd man in here is Cam Wright (the only other option is walk-on Mike Lecak), if needed due to foul trouble or injury.
* Cam Wright starts at SG and Lamar Patterson starts at SF. Durand Johnson first comes in early to spell Wright and then swings over to SF when Dixon sits Patterson and brings Wright back in. So, two positions filled by three players, all with experience. Johnson, put in 21 against Slippery Rock and was our leading scorer. Chris Jones is the 4th player in this mix and looks solid overall except his shots are not falling. If he gets this then we got 4 good players here.
* Mike Young starts at PF and is spelled by Jamel Artis, who is in turn spelled by Aron Nwankwo. Young and Artis are both freshmen and have a common freshmen problem, picking up too many fouls. Thus the need for Nwankwo, who is not bad at all. Probably better than Artis right now. Young and Artis, need more time to get their feet wet, and hopefully will show major progress in our 4 games before Barclays. Artis had no points, 1 rebound, 2 turnovers and fouled out in just 8 minutes of PT against Slipperr Rock. He has the talent and the attitude just needs experience. Again, going to be a 'learning experience' at this position but the talent is there. Patterson could also see time here if needed.
* Talib Zanna starts at C and is spelled by Derrick Randall. Zanna, at 230 is not that big for C but can probably beat every C in the country down the floor. Randall, is a big body that can defend and rebound and score a bit. He is important so we don't otherwise get pushed around inside, and should fill that role. Mike Young is the 3rd man in here in case of foul trouble or injury.
This team has a lot of talent but the freshmen need to progress and the players need to rise to the occasion and come together as a team when the time comes. So, should be interesting as to what happens in the 4 upcoming home games and the tournament at Barclays.
