Pitt baseball opens Big East play on road at St. John's

Pitt's baseball team is off to a good start at 12-6, but things are about to go up another level as the team prepares for Big East play.

First up is a series on the road against St. John's. While Pitt has exceeded expectations so far, St. John's has disappointed. The Red Storm were picked to finish second in the Big East in the preseason, but are currently near the bottom of the standings with a 7-11 record. Big East play hasn't begun in earnest yet, but that's still got to be a huge disappointment for a team that received a few first-place votes in the preseason conference projections.

As the athletic department page indicates, Pitt is near the top of the conference in several offensive categories. They've played some weaker competition, so the jury is still out on just how good they may be. Conversely, St. John's has faced several good teams with winning records including Ohio State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, East Carolina, and Florida Gulf Coast. Plus, even though St. John's has gotten off to a slow start, they've now won five in a row. Don't be fooled by the record - this should be a tough series for the Panthers.

All three games will be on ESPN3 and play starts this afternoon.
