Pitt's football team has some difficult games coming up for 2013. And by some early gambling indications, the Panthers aren't expected to compete very well.
Pitt enters as heavy underdogs against some of their biggest opponents. According to the Golden Nugget, which releases odds on college football games, Pitt isn't expected to win any of their games against Florida State, Notre Dame, Miami, or Virginia Tech. Not only that, but the Panthers are getting quite a few points in each contest.
The Panthers check in as 13-point underdogs against Florida State in the Labor Day opener, 13 1/2-point underdogs against Virginia Tech, 10 1/2-point underdogs against Notre Dame, and 7-point underdogs against Miami. Keep in mind, that's despite the fact that all of those games with the exception of the one against the Hokies are at home (which is generally worth a few points).
Here's the thing, though - Pitt should be underdogs in all of those and while it's quite possible that Pitt can win one or two of those games, it's not to be expected. Still, 13 against Florida State? 13 1/2 against Virginia Tech? Doesn't sound as if all that much is expected out of Pitt this season from Vegas.
