Per ZagsBlog, Pitt is hot on the trail of 2014 guard, Ja'Quan Newton out of Philadelphia. The Panthers just recently offered him and, per Rivals, his other offers have come from Georgetown, Miami, Villanova, Penn State, and others. ZagsBlog lists several other schools including UCLA, USC, Texas A&M, and Oregon.
Newton is one of the best guards available in 2014. Rivals lists him as the No. 41 overall player while Scout calls him the eighth best shooting guard. The two sites differ on position as Rivals says he's a point guard.
Both have him listed as a four-star player. He plans to cut his list to a top five next week.
If he comes to Pitt as a point guard, he would be a good transition option from James Robinson, who will be a junior next year. Pitt also has Newkirk, who I believe will play some point guard this year, but Pitt would have a lot of flexibility with Robinson, Newkirk, Mostella, and Newton if he decided to come aboard.
Meanwhile, he and fellow 2014 guard Isaiah Whitehead are apparently discussing a package deal for the two players. Whitehead is even more highly touted as a five-star recruit and also has been offered by Pitt.
It's still crazy early, so no real need to pay close attention just yet. My guess is that it's probably a long shot since so many schools are pursuing them and the aforementioned guards Pitt already has are expected to be pretty good.
But, hey - worth keeping an eye on Newton's top five decision next week.
