Notre Dame leaving for the ACC

9

Is this the end game? Depends on whether ESPN wants to crush the Big East once and for all. The way to do that of course would be to stop Tim Pernetti, the one man who has kept the Big East afloat over the past year as Providence worked to destroy the conference. Rutgers is a clear choice in football obviously, and with Jim Calhoun near retirement, let's hope that if the ACC makes a basketball decision, it's a little more muddled. I actually like the fact that Notre Dame is leaving the Big East from a basketball perspective, as anything that hurts the league's basketball programs relatively is a good. However, this will hurt the football teams' bowl access.

Notre Dame Apparently Headed To The ACC (For All But Football, Hockey)

+
Updated with SB Nation link. I guess the idea of playing basketball against the likes of SMU and Houston didn't sit well in South Bend. The first info I saw on this subjecthttp://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8369070/notre-dame-sports-football-hockey-acc came from ESPN's Brett McMurphy, who has a good track record with this sort of thing. While I've been expecting a move like this for some time (based on message board chatter), I didn't quite expect it today. The Fighting Irish will now see a sizable chunk of its football schedule filled with ACC opposition (5 games according to McMurphy). Plus, they'll join fellow ACC rival Boston College in Hockey East. (Note the ACC will need four more teams to sponsor hockey as a conference, a big number, but not too sizable.) The big question is when this move happens, given the Big East's 27-month notice requirement. But, hey, it's not like Notre Dame would have much issue getting past that hurdle financially. Another is if football joins the conference down the road at some point, perhaps when the NBC money runs out.

Notre Dame To Join ACC

Notre Dame is moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference in every sport except football, where the Fighting Irish will maintain their status as an independent.

Pitt to ACC for 2013-14 Season

The University of Pittsburgh is going to court in hopes of expediting its exit from the Big East...The central issue is the way the Big East handled West Virginia's and TCU's departure. "By failing to require WVU to provide 27 months' notice of withdrawal, the Big East knowingly and intentionally waived any right to enforce a 27-month withdrawal period," Pitt wrote in court papers.

Georgia and Clemson Put Their Money Where Their Mouths Are

The cancellation fee for the 2013 and 2014 rivalry renewals just went up to $3,000,000. I'd say both athletic directors are pretty serious when they say these games are going to happen. Go 'Dawgs!

Georgia Tech, FSU, and Clemson and ACC Scheduling Dependency

2

Bud Elliot of Tomahawk Nation: In order to preserve seven home games, FSU and Clemson, both in the Atlantic Division, and both with road games in odd years at UF and South Carolina, respectively, need the Atlantic division to play its five home games in odd numbered years. Georgia Tech has the same need in the Coastal, only reversed, as they play at Georgia in even years. The solution is obvious and I have a lot of faith that the ACC will get this right.

BlueGoldNews Reporting Possible Early Exit Terms

Sources confirmed to BlueGoldNews.com that Pittsburgh -- which announced in late September that it will leave the Big East for the ACC -- was told it could avoid the Big East’s 27-month waiting period to exit by paying a sum of approximately $21 million. It is believed Syracuse, which is also making the Big East-to-ACC move, was given the same opportunity. Sources could not confirm the same opportunity had been extended to WVU by Friday morning, but they expected a similar offer would allow the school to move to the Big 12 as quickly as the 2012-13 athletic year.
