Pitt To Honor Injured Rutgers' Player Eric LeGrand

Pitt will join others in honoring injured Rutgers' player Eric LeGrand this weekend in its game against the Scarlet Knights. LeGrand was paralyzed last weekend in Rutgers' win over Army.

Dave Wannstedt recognized LeGrand in his press conference today:

"This was a very, very unfortunate injury," Wannstedt said at his weekly news conference today. "I corresponded with [Rutgers coach] Greg Schiano and let him know that from our team and our players, our thoughts and prayers are with Eric.

"We are very hopeful that he makes a full recovery. You look at these players as your kids and you are responsible for them and you feel that responsibility on the field and off the field. I know Greg and I know he is doing everything he can possibly do to try to help in any way he possibly can.

The team is preparing a special banner for this weekend's game:

The Pitt athletic department has created a banner with the message "Pitt is pulling for Eric LeGrand" and it will hang at the Petersen Events Center, then it will be moved down in the Student Union later in the week.

Pitt's players, students and members of the university community at large are being encouraged to sign the banner and offer words of encouragement and it will then be on display at Heinz Field Saturday for the game near the student section.

It's a relatively small gesture and I'm sure the team will also make mention of LeGrand before the game. Still, a classy move.
