Only minutes after the NFL Draft, it was learned Pitt wide receiver Mike Shanahan would be signing a free agent deal with the New York Jets. Shanahan himself tweeted the news:
Proud to be a member of the JETS!!
— Michael Shanahan (@Mike_Shan87) April 27, 2013
As I covered a bit yesterday, Shanahan is likely destined to become a tight end in the NFL. The interesting thing is that, obviously, he could end up catching passes from West Virginia's Geno Smith, who the Jets took in the second round. The Jets' quarterback situation is, interesting, to say the least. There's Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow (though, Tebow is being rumored to potentially be cut), Smith, and a few other guys.
Shanahan could actually be walking into a decent situation in New York if he does indeed move to tight end. The Jets just lost Dustin Keller, who joined the Dolphins in the offseason, and are without a strong option there right now. .
He could get a legitimate shot to stick with the team.
