Let me start this off by saying that tonight's game is the toughest on Pitt's schedule. Let me also say that tonight's game showed just how far the Panthers have to go before making an impact in the ACC. Finally, I'll say that Florida State has a very good quarterback who is worthy of the hype.
Jameis Winston put on a show tonight at Heinz Field. He completed, I don't know, like every pass. What more can you say, the kid impressed more than anyone ever thought. Winston was the story of this game.
From Pitt's perspective, the defense did little to contain or stop Winston. Press coverage is apparently frowned upon by Defensive Coordinator Matt House. Linebackers missed so many assignments that I lost track by the 2nd quarter. It was ugly from the defensive side of the ball.
However, I think we need to take a step back and look at this game for what it is. The Panthers, who are in the rebuilding process, opened against a very good team. The Seminoles could possibly play for a National Championship this season. Pitt also played at least 11 true freshmen and there were a few bright spots. Tyler Boyd made the most notable impact from all the freshmen. Boyd needs to get the ball any way possible. Also, James Conner looked capable of carrying the load at running back. Devin Street had a very nice game and looked very much like a "great" receiver and not just productive.
It was a rough night for the Panthers, but let's not fold it up for the season. Pitt took it's lumps, but how the team responds and learns from this loss could set them up for a very nice season.
