Pitt Football Recruiting: Panthers get commit from TE Nick Bowers

USA TODAY Sports

Pitt's 2014 Class isn't signed yet, but that isn't stopping head coach Paul Chryst from working on 2015. The Panthers recently got a commitment from offensive lineman Alex Paulina and on Monday, Pitt got their second commit in tight end Nick Bowers from Kittanning.

Rivals and 247 both have him unrated. Rivals has his only other current offer as being from Temple. I'm generally all about looking at the offers for kids, but since we're more than a year away from 2015 even being able to sign, you can't even take that too seriously at this point since more offers could be on the way. The Post-Gazette's Mike White says others were also starting to show interest.

Pitt offered him in either December and that seems like it came as a big surprise to Bowers and his coach:

"We were kind of holding his highlight tape to send out to colleges in mid-January," Kittanning coach Frank Fabian said. "We were actually kind of shocked when the scholarship offer came in, but we're happy, too."

Bowers is listed as a tight end by Rivals, but Jerry DiPaola says he has some versatility:

Sounds like he also played some linebacker as well.

Bowers is, um, a big kid, to say the least. Rivals and 247 both list him as 6'4" and that would make for a nice target at tight end. He also got his first taste of the Oakland Zoo as he was apparently at the Duke mess game. He also had the full Pitt treatment, coming to check out the Notre Dame and Miami football games.
