Bubbles Anderson missed the bulk of last season with a torn ACL. In her opening statement at the women's basketball team's media day, head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio says that Bubbles will be out this season - with another torn ACL.
"Moving to the junior class, we have two juniors who, unfortunately, are injured," said McConnell-Serio. "Bubbles Anderson had torn her ACL last December and had re-torn it this summer in the rehab process and will be out this season."
The head coach also mentioned that Brittany Gordon, a guard averaging 2.6 points and 1.7 rebounds last year, will be out for a while following a shoulder surgery.
The news about Bubbles specifically is really disappointing. At 6'11", she may be the tallest woman in college basketball and showed some promise last season - her first on the court at Pitt. After redshirting in 2012-13, she averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 rebounds last year in 18.6 minutes per game. Her 2.3 blocks per game ranked 4th in the ACC when she went down with the injury.
I've covered a few men's games at the Pete and remember passing by her before a game in the hallway on the way to the media section. Needless to say, hearing about a 6'11" women's basketball player and seeing one in person are two entirely different things. She was still pretty raw last year, but was making strides. Hopefully she's able to return healthy next season, but tearing the same ACL doesn't sound like a great thing.
The team begins practice on Monday.
