Rob Dowdy committed on September 1, and it was quite a surprise to mostly everyone. Dowdy is a well-regarded offensive linemen from Ohio with many offers. There was little buzz around Pitt and Dowdy leading up to the commitment, and that is why it came as a surprise to most people. Either way, Pitt got a very good player. His offer list features schools like Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Michigan State, Arizona State, and Miami. Dowdy also gets a three-star rating across the board from the major recruiting websites.
Dowdy checks in at 6'5" and is just shy of 300 pounds. He has a chance to compete at guard and tackle in the coming seasons. Pitt has plenty of talent and experience coming back on the offensive line next season and Dowdy will have the luxury of redshirting and not being rushed into action.
Paul Chryst has really put a great deal of effort into building up the offensive line, and Dowdy is a great example of that. At the time of his commitment, Pitt already had two offensive linemen and most people expected Pitt to be done with the line for this class. Perhaps they were finished with the offensive line, but with a player of his pedigree, it may have altered Pitt's plan for this recruiting class. Dowdy looks like a very talented player and could be a good one down the line.
