On Friday, Pitt wrapped up its 2014 volleyball regular season, finishing an impressive 25-6 on the year. The Panthers defeated lowly Notre Dame in three sets to end the season on a high note.
The Panthers now await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. You can catch it on ESPNU to see if the team will extend their season.
25-6 is an impressive record, but the Panthers will need to overcome a fairly low RPI (No. 51 as of last week) and some bad losses to a 15-14 Virginia Tech team. Here's the thing, though. All of Pitt's losses have come to teams ranked ahead of them in the RPI and the Panthers don't have a single sub-50 RPI loss or a loss to a team with a losing record. Three of the team's losses have come to Top 25 ranked programs in Florida State, North Carolina, and Colorado, and Pitt was highly competitive in matches against the Seminoles and Tar Heels.
In other words, they certainly lost to some teams they should have beaten, but they don't have the absolutely paralyzing loss to a hapless team, either.
We'll see how things shape up Sunday. Regardless of what happens during the selection show, Pitt's program appears to be one on the rise and had a strong season.
