I get it - most of you were too busy watching Syracuse-Duke basketball tonight. But Pitt's No. 7 ranked wrestling squad had a big night at West Virginia and the Panthers came away big winners, 33-6. The team is now 11-1 on the year.
Had a chance to watch the meet as it was streamed on West Virginia's website. Pitt's wrestlers looked every bit as impressive as the final score. I caught the last seven matches and came away pretty impressed. Nick Bonaccorsi put on a dominant showing, leading 12-0 before recording a pin in the second period at the 197 weight class. No. 7 ranked Tyler Wilps and No. 6 Max Thomusseit also recorded strong wins and heavyweight P.J. Tasser put the icing on the cake scoring a late victory. With only about ten seconds left tied in his match with A.J. Vizarrondo, scored a late takedown to win, 6-4.
The Panthers never trailed and put on a strong performance from start to finish. The only losses on the night were No. 16 ranked Edgar Bright at 141 pounds and Mikey Racciato at 149. After Pitt built up an early 6-0 lead, those two defeats tied the meet up 6-6. From there, though, the Panthers cruised, winning the final six matches. Geno Morelli (165 pounds), No. 6 ranked Thomusseit (184), and No. 18 ranked Bonaccorsi (197) all scored pins.
Next up for Pitt is Virginia Tech on Friday at the Field House. The meet will be on ESPN3.
