Cardiac Hill Podcast #8: Catching up with DeAndre Kane

At least we can still say he's from Pittsburgh, right?

After lots of speculation and even some certainty that he would spend his final 365 days of eligibility at the Petersen Events Center, DeAndre Kane ended up an Iowa State Cyclone at the end of the day. A product of the Hill District and Kennard Park, Kane grew up watching Brandon Knight and the Panthers.

So why not play for them?

Now almost a year later, the former quarterback for the late Schenley High School is flushing 17.1 points-per-game, dishing it 5.9 times, and coming down with 6.7 rebounds too.

His father, Calvin, won the state title with Schenley 29 years before he did, defeating Sam Bowie and Lebanon High in the PIAA title. Kane wears #50 in his father's honor, who passed away in 2011 while DeAndre was playing at Marshall, and boy does he wear it well:

NBA-bound after the Cyclones season comes to a close, scouts say the only factor keeping him from being a top-10 selection in the NBA draft is his age. But in my opinion, that only makes him more ready. At 24 years old, Kane and Iowa State are on their way to what many believe could be an extremely successful postseason.

..and to think that Greg McDermott's son might've played with Kane & Big-12 AP Player of the Year Melvin Ejim had Greg kept the job with the Cyclones.

I caught up with DeAndre during his bus ride to Kansas City for the Big 12 Tournament yesterday to talk his childhood, his choosing of ISU over Pitt, Lamar Patterson, and his favorite food in the City of Bridges.
