Games for Pitt's non-conference basketball schedule are trickling out and an intriguing one leaked recently. The Panthers will reportedly be playing host to the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles.
Credit to Liam over at the blog FGCU Eagles Nest, who pointed this out to me earlier in the day. The Eagles' athletic director Ken Kavanagh tweeted out the news:
Unfortunately that December 30th date means a lot of students will miss the game since they'll be away on break. Attendance for that one should be interesting.
FGCU, as they're better known as, was famous for shocking the world a couple of years ago in the NCAAs with their tournament run. 'Dunk City' knocked off No. 2 seed Georgetown in their first game then beat No. 7 San Diego State as a 15 seed. In the Sweet 16, they fell to Florida, but still made their mark in the tournament.
There's been a lot of news about Pitt needing to improve their non-con schedule after last year's weak slate. While it's a home game against a mid-major team, this is anything but an easy contest. FGCU didn't make the tournament again last year, but still managed to go 22-13 last year and giving No. 1 seed Florida State a difficult game in the first-round of the NIT before losing by five.
On the surface, the Panthers appear to have added a challenging game to next year's schedule.
