Pitt's volleyball team concluded its regular season on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Virginia. On the season, the Panthers finish 23-9.

It's been sort of an up and down year for the team that gained some national recognition last year. And despite a strong season, it doesn't look like they did quite enough to get into the NCAA Tournament.

Unlike last year, the Panthers got a big statement win, defeating the No. 15 Florida State Seminoles earlier this season. Not having that seemed to plague the team as they were left out of the tourney. However, last year's squad also lost three fewer games, finishing 25-6. And while this is less important, I also seem to recall last year's team getting votes in the poll at or near the end of the year. As of right now, this year's team is not getting any votes. I'm far from an expert on volleyball and as you can imagine, finding tournament projections in the sport isn't nearly as easy as getting them for college basketball. But overall, it's difficult seeing Pitt getting into this year's field after they couldn't crack it last season.

Either way we'll know soon. The NCAA Tournament selection show will be on Sunday the 29th at 9:00 p.m. on ESPNU. Even without a tournament appearance, though, you still have to be pleased with the direction of the program under head coach Dan Fisher. The Panthers have won a total of 49 matches the past two years and before last year, hadn't won 20 matches in a season since 2010.
