Pitt Football Training Camp: Jordan Whitehead still a candidate for boundary safety starting job

New, 1 comment

Ever since joining the team, true freshman Jordan Whitehead has been making his presence felt. Last week, it was said that he could receive quality reps as soon as the team's opener against Youngstown State. That may not be all, however - it sounds as if Whitehead could in fact land the starting job at boundary safety.

Right now, he's in a competition with Pat Amara and Jevonte Pitts. This week, Narduzzi said the job hasn't been won yet, calling it 'up in the air.'

The Post-Gazette's Sam Werner says Whitehead isn't exactly a third wheel, either. On Monday, he actually got some work with the first team.

Where's this all end? We won't know until the opener, obviously. My guess, though, is that Whitehead would have to be the clear top option to get the start on opening day.

Coaches don't want to make it seem like top recruits are being handed anything and, more to the point, you don't want to throw him right into the fire, either, unless he's ready. You can bet that he'd be tested right off the bat by opposing quarterbacks and you have to be careful about forcing things too early. But even if Whitehead doesn't start the season on the field, you can probably expect him to get plenty of playing time early this year.
