Pitt takes on Georgia Tech this afternoon, as you all know, while next week’s opponent will sit and watch the Panthers to do their own scouting. Pitt will travel to Charlottesville, VA a week from today to kickoff, at 12:30, against the Virginia Cavaliers. Before the teams play next week, at Scott Stadium, the Cavaliers could be a little different from what Pitt will study, on film.
That’s because the Cavaliers have a bye this week. That can be very helpful for a team, in their situation. Their situation being that they have a new coach in Bronco Mendenhall. Mendenhall comes from a successful career as BYU’s coach, where the Cougars never finished worst then 6-6 in his 11 seasons. He had another season of 7-6, but all other seasons featured teams with eight wins or more.
The Cavaliers have been struggling for a good while now and it looked to be more of the same, but maybe they seem to be getting the hang of how Mendenhall coaches. The season started with three straight losses and one of them was to FCS’ Richmond and also a loss to UConn. However, they have rebounded with wins over Central Michigan and Duke. Those are not exactly elite teams, but obviously Virginia is starting to grasp Mendenhall’s system.
We’ll find out next week, as a bye week, may even help the Cavaliers study themselves, as much as they’ll be studying Pitt. If you want to get a look at them, go to WatchESPN, and check out one of their last two games, as those will probably be closer to what Pitt will face, more than the first three. Afterall, I think we all remember how the Paul Chryst era started out, at Pitt.
