These are the type of weeks that are easiest for us. Pitt had only one game this week due to finals and that meant our Panther of the Week was based solely on that contest. Jamel Artis made it pretty easy for us in Pitt’s 83-73 victory over the Rice Owls. Artis held off Ryan Luther, who came off of the bench to chip in 20 points.
Artis would not be denied and finally stopped the Michael Young streak to open this season as Panther of the Week. Artis was on fire and poured in 31 points and added five rebounds, along with three assists and one steal. His stat line included being 4 of 7 from three-point land and 7 of 9 from the charity stripe.
Pitt is now 9-2 heading into this week and the senior leadership of Artis and Young has been key. If the Panthers want to make any noise in ACC play when it begins, they will need to keep getting games like they have so far from the senior duo. The Panthers also could use some help from others on the team and Luther helped with that this past weekend. If Pitt can get Sheldon Jeter going, too, that would help even more.
