On Wednesday, the Pitt women's basketball team won its opening game of the ACC Tournament by defeating North Carolina. Thursday was a different game, though, and the Panthers were promptly ousted by No. 21 ranked Miami, 77-55.
The opener against the Tar Heels was a much closer contest. Pitt was completely overmatched against the Hurricanes in this one. The Panthers did hang around for a little bit but was down by 17 at the half and out of things relatively quickly.
At 13-18, there won't be a WNIT bid waiting for Pitt and their season is clearly over.
A year like this was somewhat expected. The Panthers are incredibly young and starting an entire roster of underclassmen. Not only that, but eight of the team's top nine scorers are all underclassmen. Save for Fred Potvin, the three juniors on the roster (there are no seniors) are playing minor roles.
Pitt should certainly be better next season and can hopefully contend for another NCAA Tournament berth. As coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said afterwards, the future is bright.
