Suzie McConnell-Serio leads Team USA to U18 FIBA Americas gold medal

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this year, we mentioned that Suzie McConnell-Serio would be leading the U18 Team USA women's basketball squad at the FIBA Americas tournament. That event happened this past week and the team won the gold medal on Sunday night.

Team USA easily defeated Canada in the gold medal final, winning 109-62 in Chile. As a result, the team defended its U18 title and now automatically qualifies for the U19 Tournament next year.

The Pitt women's basketball coach and her team had little trouble in the event, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record.

First, they crushed Guatemala, 117-32 and then defeated Brazil 80-59, in their closest game of the event. In Game 3, they routed Venezuela, 110-52, to reach the semifinals. In the next round, they defeated Puerto Rico, 104-36 to reach the final against Canada.

Overall, just a great experience and resume-builder for McConnell-Serio as she continues to lead the women's basketball program.
