Pitt fans got a little bit of good news with the releasing of the Panthers’ injury report for this week’s game against North Carolina. As of now, it looks like the secondary will get a little deeper with the return of Avonte Maddox at cornerback.
Maddox suffered an arm injury against Duke two games ago and missed the team’s last contest against Virginia. Potentially getting Maddox back this soon would be really good news that is sort of unexpected, given the injury looked kind of bad and that he was listed as ‘Out’ against the Cavaliers less than two weeks ago.
Pitt’s defense has done well in his absence but it’s great to get him back this week if he does indeed play. The Panthers will have two remaining games after the Tar Heels and will be playing for a bowl game. It would be nice to get Maddox back into the flow of things a little this week if possible before those games. He’s plenty experienced, obviously, but has also been out of game action for a couple of weeks.
Some bad news was also given, though, as tight end Matt Flanagan is listed as out for this game. Flanagan has been targeted a decent amount this season and has generally been good for a handful of catches every game. He’s tied for fifth on the team with 17 catches this year (for 160 yards) and his absence should open up the door for Chris Clark to see some more opportunities. It also could mean more of a look for freshman Tyler Sear, who has already burned his redshirt this season.
The full injury report is listed below.
Probable: Avonte Maddox, Keyshon Camp, Dewayne Hendrix, Anthony McKee, Jr.
Out: Matt Flanagan, Malik Henderson, George Aston, Quintin Wirginis
