AJ Davis commits to Pitt

A four-star running back picks Pitt on national TV

NCAA Football: Syracuse at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pat Narduzzi certainly knows how to keep a secret. Well, not really. That tweet got everyone running to a TV to put on ESPN2 just in time to see Lakeland, Florida running AJ Davis commit to the Pitt Panthers on national television. This announcement should wrap up the class of 2017 at 24 commitments.

AJ Davis is now the second four-star running back to commit to the Pitt Panthers for this recruiting cycle, joining Ohio native Todd Sibley. With James Conner leaving early, it’s nice to have some serious talent entering the fold at the position next season. AJ Davis is graded as a four-star by three of the four major recruiting outlets. He is #147 on the ESPN300 rankings, and ranked #247 on the RIvals250 rankings. Both sites call him the 14th running back in the nation.

Not only did Davis pick Pitt over Louisville and South Florida on ESPN2 today, he had a host of additional offers. Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Oklahoma just to name a few. He is a teammate of already signed Pitt recruit, Damarri Mathis, which many suspect helped Pitt get into the mix.

Pitt finishes the class with seven recruits out of the state of Florida. It has been an added emphasis by this staff to hit the Sunshine State hard, and it’s paying off this cycle. Davis is the first four-star Florida recruit to commit to Pitt since Conredge Collins back in 2005. We’ll see how the class finishes in the final team rankings sometime tomorrow, as there are still moving parts the rest of the day for other schools across the country.
