Pitt vs. Syracuse: Open Gamethread

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

With a little momentum under its belt after a win against Boston College, Pitt squares off against Syracuse this afternoon.

Pitt fell to Syracuse earlier this year, 77-66 and, to be fair, the game wasn't even that close. The Panthers were down by 21 points at the break and the loss to the Orange was what started the horrendous eight-game slide.

Pitt gets this one at home but Syracuse is also playing much better these days. At the time of the last game, Syracuse looked dead in the water. Now, they've won five in a row and have beaten two top ten teams in that stretch in Florida State and Virginia. Plus, Pitt's dominance against the Syracuse zone seems to have dissipated practically overnight.

And despite a 16-9 overall record, the Orange are 8-4 in the ACC and a game out of first place.

Still, there's no doubt that if Pitt plays well, they are capable of winning. The Orange still have some defensive problems, giving up 93 points to North Carolina State and 81 to Clemson in those last five games. They also needed a buzzer-beater to knock off the Tigers at home and the Wolfpack took them to overtime, so they haven't been invincible.

When Pitt has been on, they've been able to be competitive against North Carolina, Virginia, and Duke - three of the better teams in the conference. Will they bring it against Syracuse today? Time will tell. Pitt is playing for some pride here but Syracuse will be hungry, too, since they have work to do to get into the tournament.

Game time is at 1:00 p.m. and you can catch it
