Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell didn't surface at the team's training camp, which opened this week. Bell's holdout means good news for former Pitt running back James Conner.
Conner should compete for time as a rookie this season, and depending what happens with Bell's holdout, could play quite a bit. We're still a ways off from the NFL season starting but for now, Conner is in line for increased carries. CBS Sports says he's the favorite to win the team's backup running back job.
Over the long haul, that might not mean too much. But for a rookie trying to make a good first impression early, Conner will have the chance to impress right off the bat and will get more of a look than he would if Bell was present. Bell will be the clear starter when he returns, obviously, but Conner's extra looks could help him seal the backup job.
