Pitt women's soccer team mired in deep slump

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

As recently as 2015, the women's soccer team showed some real promise of breaking through to some success in the ACC. Nowadays, though, the program is struggling to keep up.

Last year, the team went 2-15-1 overall and won only one conference game. This year, the team isn't quite that bad but still struggling to find its footing.

The team is 3-5-3, already besting its win total from last year. That's the good news. The bad news is that, well, that's still not real good. And recently, the team has really struggled. The Panthers haven't won in their last six matches and the best result they've earned over that stretch was a 1-1 tie against Virginia Tech. The team's last victory was on August 30th against Detroit.

The competition has been tough, though. Three of those six matches have been against ranked programs and that's just made it difficult. Things won't get much easier in the difficult ACC, either. Three of the team's final seven opponents are currently ranked, too.

The program has a long way to go to become competitive again. The schedule is difficult the rest of the way out but if they can even win a couple of more games, that would show some real improvement over last year and get them moving in the right direction again.
