The Pitt volleyball team knew they would be in the NCAA Tournament. Sunday was just a matter of finding out where they were slotted.
As announced tonight in the selection show, the Panthers will enter the tournament as the No. 12 overall seed. As a result, they’ll host the first two rounds, facing 20-7 Iona first on Friday and then will need to take on the winner of Michigan and Navy, should they win the first match.
The hope was that Pitt would be one of the top 16 seeds to host the first two rounds as opposed to having to travel to Penn State again. That looked like the outcome as Pitt defeated Georgia Tech earlier this week to finish the season at 29-1.
Just a great year overall and hard to complain. It would have been great to see Pitt defeat Duke and be in consideration for a top four seed but the Panthers will at least host the first two rounds.
This year undoubtedly has different expectations. The last couple of years were about trying to simply get to the NCAAs. This year, the goal has to be to advance past the opening week.
