Against the Odds: As expected, Pitt is a heavy underdog to Clemson

NCAA Football: Pittsburgh at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Pitt was expected to be a heavy underdog against Clemson in this week’s ACC championship game. So this week’s opening line was no surprise, really.

The Panthers opened as 20-point underdogs to the Tigers. Some could even argue that it should be more. Clemson has not just defeated its opponents but crushed them. They’ve beaten everyone by 20 points or more this year, with the exception of enduring a pair of close games against Texas A&M and Syracuse.

Scoring nearly 45 points per game and giving up only a little more than 12 per contest, it’s easy to see that they’re games haven’t been that close.

Still, the line was similarly bad when the Panthers pulled off the upset in 2016, defeating Clemson on the road.
