Pitt was nearly a 20-point underdog to Notre Dame today in their ACC Tournament game, so things were much closer than expected. But in the end, it was the same result as the Panthers’ other 18 conference games.
A loss.
The Panthers lost to Notre Dame 67-64 after staging a nice second half comeback. They trailed by as much as 14 points after the break but managed to get it to within in two in the final minute. Pitt didn’t have quite enough, though, and fell just short.
An admirable performance given that Pitt had been so bad this season. But there’s likely no chance that this game has any effect on the status of head coach Kevin Stallings. I expect the decision to retain or fire has been made for some time and another near-miss isn’t going to help his cause much.
Another game, another disappointing loss. That’s the takeaway here, unfortunately. I give the kids credit for fighting until the bitter end but, as I said some time ago, at some point, the moral victories end. When you haven’t won a single conference game all year, ‘keeping it close’ becomes less and less attractive.
And with that, boys and girls, your season is a wrap.
