Pitt volleyball shoots up to No. 14 in the rankings

Pitt entered the season as the No. 20 volleyball team in the country. After a weekend that saw them win three consecutive matches to start the year, the team shot up to No. 14 in the AVCA poll this week. Of teams that were ranked, that was the biggest move anyone made up the polls.

Part of the Panthers’ weekend was a win against No. 24 Cal Poly. The coaches in the poll didn’t seem that loss too bad for Cal Poly as they remained in that slot, staying in the Top 25. Pitt remains the only ACC team ranked in the poll.

As I mentioned, that’s really good news for Pitt. The Panthers probably will not face many (if any) ranked teams in the ACC so it’s important they have good showings against ranked opponents outside of the conference. Beating Cal Poly and sweeping the weekend was important for the team.

Keep an eye on those polls, too. As I wrote earlier, Pitt heads to Seton Hall for three matches this weekend and none of their opponents (Seton Hall, Oklahoma, and VCU) are ranked. If (and it’s a big if) Pitt can get by all three of those foes, they could find themselves in the top ten by the following week.
