Pitt's Amber Brown named ACC Freshman of the Week

The Pitt women’s basketball team is enduring some growing pains under second-year head coach Lance White, but there are undoubtedly some promising pieces in place on the roster. One of the top young talents on the team is Amber Brown, a freshman guard out of Monroe, Louisiana, and after averaging a double-double over the past week, she was named ACC Freshman of the Week.

Although Pitt fell in close 78-73 and 59-56 losses to Penn State and Stony Brook over the last seven days, Brown kept her team competitive in both games, as she contributed 16 points and 12 rebounds against Penn State and 15 points and eight rebounds against Stony Brook. The 6’0” forward led the Panthers in rebounds in both outings and was second only to fifth-year senior Aysia Bugg in scoring.

All told, Brown averaged 15.5 points on 48 percent shooting over the two-game stretch while grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game, and that isn’t a departure from the norm. Albeit in the context of a brief collegiate career, Brown ranks second on the team in points this season, with 12.1 per game, and she leads the team in rebounds, with 8.4 per game. She has also produced four double-doubles this season, which ranks second among freshman nationally and second among ACC players.

Brown is the first Pitt player to earn a weekly honor from the ACC since Jasmine Whitney did so in 2016. She is also the third player in program history to earn the ACC Freshman of the Week honor. The first was Pitt forward Yacine Diop in 2014. Whitney followed with two Freshman of the Week awards in 2016.
