The Pittsburgh Panthers (9-38, 4-14) won their series over the Syracuse Orange (19-25, 8-10) on Sunday afternoon, two games to one. It marked the first ACC series that Pitt managed to emerge victorious, but to be fair, the team is finally healthy for the most part.
Junior catcher Walker Barbee continued her hot streak at the plate. A stand-up triple in the second inning put Pitt up 1-0. Senior shortstop Olivia Gray added a solo shot to lead off the third inning, which pushed the Panthers lead to 3-0. Barbee continued to terrorize Syracuse at her next at bat; her two-run blast over the left field fence which pushed the Panthers lead to 5-0.
Defensively, Pitt was excellent. Senior pitcher Sarah Dawson looked fully healthy in a complete game win in which she let up just one earned run. Dawson painted the corners well on Friday, but was jamming the hands of hitters as well today. She allowed just 2 hits while forcing 13 grounds outs. Gray recorded a season-high 6 assists.
Barbee and Dawson spoke after the game:
Take a listen to Sarah Dawson and Walker Barbee’s thoughts following today’s series-clinching 6-1 win over Syracuse.
