The preseason accolades continue to roll in for Pitt kick returner Maurice Ffrench, as CBS Sports named him a preseason All-American on Tuesday, placing him on the second team. Ffrench has also been placed on the Maxwell Award and Hornung Award watch lists and was included on the preseason All-ACC team.
Ffrench was one of 10 ACC players included on the preseason All-America team. However, Clemson secured the most representation among ACC teams, as it placed two players on the first team and three more on the second team. Ffrench was Pitt’s lone representative.
Notably, Ffrench was beat out for the first-team kick returner spot by Savon Scarver of Utah State. Scarver matched Ffrench’s two kick return touchdowns and managed to accrue 742 yards on 22 returns in 2018 compared to Ffrench’s 547 yards on 20 returns.
With that said, Ffrench offers the Panthers much more than his services as a kick returner, as he accounted for 10 touchdowns, including six on receptions and two on runs, last season. He also contributed 515 receiving yards and 164 rushing yards in addition to his 547 kick return yards, making him one of the team’s most versatile players.
Ffrench could also see his role expand, as he is currently listed on the Pitt depth chart as the team’s top punt returner in addition to his existing roles as a starting wide receiver and kick returner. And with former UMass head coach Mark Whipple now serving as Pitt’s offensive coordinator, Ffrench could benefit further, as the Pitt passing attack is expected to improve with Whipple calling plays.
