Pitt and Georgia Tech were set to square off at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta in a primetime matchup on Wednesday, but that game has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Georgia Tech program.
The game is Pitt’s second in a row to be postponed over COVID-19 issues and its fourth this season. In December, the team's games with Duke and Notre Dame were postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Pitt program, and last week, a game with Florida State was postponed due to testing issues within the Florida State program.
So far, only the Notre Dame game has been rescheduled. It was originally set to be played on Jan. 2 and has since been rescheduled for Jan. 30. However, the fate of the other three games remains unclear, and with each passing day, the window in which to reschedule them becomes smaller with the postseason set to get underway in mid-March.
One benefit for Pitt is that it is without star small forward Justin Champagnie for three to five weeks, and the four postponements have mitigated the potential damage to the team’s record that his absence could have caused. In addition, the Florida State postponement prevented Pitt from having to potentially play down three more men, as Noah Collier, John Hugley and Nike Sibande all missed Pitt’s trip to Syracuse and were still questionable.
The Pitt-Georgia Tech had previously been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday for reasons that were not stated. Now, it is unclear when or if the game will be played.
