Pitt and NC State are set to meet at the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday, and the visiting Wolfpack will be missing one of its starters, as Thomas Allen suffered an injury this week during a team practice.
Allen, a starter at shooting guard for NC State, injured his lower left leg on Monday, and although X-rays were negative, he will not take part in the game at Pitt as a result. Cam Hayes will likely see more minutes with Allen out.
Prior to the injury, Allen was shooting 37.9 percent from three-point range and was contributing 7.4 points per game as well as 1.6 assists and 2.5 rebounds. He also got to the free-throw line on a regular basis and made 78.9 percent of his foul shots.
NC State has dealt with a number of injuries this season. The ongoing issue has seen the team lose leading scorer Devon Daniels for the season after he suffered a torn ACL in NC State’s 72-67 win over Wake Forest on Jan. 27.
Braxton Beverly, a 38.5-percent three-point shooter, has also been dealing with a hip issue, which saw his minutes cut to 12 in NC State’s 69-53 loss to Duke on Saturday. Prior to that game, he had averaged 26.2 minutes per contest. But he practiced at the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday and may play.
As for Pitt, the team is physically healthy, with all of its key contributors expected to play on Wednesday. However, like NC State, the team has lost four of its last five games and will enter the game looking to pull out of a cold streak and finish the season on a high note.
