Pitt dropped their final game of the Bulldog Classic on Sunday, losing 6-4 to Virginia Commonwealth. The loss marks the third in a row for the team, which is now 5-4 on the season.

The Panthers scored four runs in the game - that's the second most scored on VCU all season. But after taking a 1-0 lead, Pitt gave up six runs over the last four innings.

The sweep is certainly disappointing after the 5-1 start. Losing to undefeated VCU wasn't a terrible loss, but not being able to grab at least one from UNC Asheville and The Citadel hurts a bit. Still, it's early in the season and with the team a game over .500, things could be worse.

After playing their first nine games on the road, Pitt will play their first games of the season at home at Cost Field next weekend. We'll have more on this a bit later.

Pitt's baseball team (5-3) lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season, falling 5-4 to UNC Asheville in extra innings on Saturday.

After a shutout loss to The Citadel, the Panthers got on the board on Saturday. But their four runs wasn't enough as UNC-Asheville scored on a wild pitch in the tenth inning.

The frustrating part isn't so much that Pitt dropped back to back games. Rather, it's that the Panthers still have to play what is the best team in the weekend event - VCU. VCU is 6-0 and routed UNC-Asheville yesterday, 12-1. They've given up only six runs all season and haven't allowed more than two in a single outing.

Pitt looked to have its hands full in a game with them, so it would have been nice to grab a win against one of the two other teams in the event. But now, the Panthers risk being swept. And if that happens, the luster off of that 5-1 start will be wearing off a bit since they could enter this week at only 5-4.

The Pitt-VCU game has an early start at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

For the first time all season, Pitt's bats fell silent against The Citadel today when the team lost 8-0. The Panthers, playing in the first game of the Bulldog Challenge, in South Carolina, just couldn't push any runs across today.

To say they were completely inept on offense would be a bit of a stretch, though. Pitt piled up eight hits while the Citadel had 12. By those standards, you'd feel as if the game should have been closer. But the Panthers squandered some opportunities. Pitt left ten guys on base and catcher Elvin Soto was the big offender, stranding five.

In the first two innings, the Panthers had runners in scoring position on second base, but stranded them. In the fifth, the team had runners on second and third, but a foul out and strike out ended the threat. In the eighth, Pitt again had a chance to score with a runner on second, but failed to get him home. Just that kind of day.

Starter Ethan Mildren gave up six runs in five innings, taking the loss. 5-2 Pitt takes on UNC-Asheville on Saturday at noon.
