Pitt to host New Mexico in 2013

Pitt will face the Lobos for the first time ever at Heinz Field on September 14th

Brendan Maloney-US PRESSWIRE

The long awaited 4th non-conference game was finally released on Thursday as ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported that the Panthers will play host to the New Mexico Lobos out of the Mountain West Conference. This will be the first time that Pitt and New Mexico have faced each other on the football field. The Pirates have a 7:05 home game that day so this figures to be a noon kickoff.

New Mexico, under former head coach Mike Locksley, was a national laughingstock, going 1-11 in three straight seasons prior to now head coach Bob Davie. Yes, that Bob Davie, the former Notre Dame head coach. Davie has begun to turn the program around as the Lobos went 4-9 in 2012, although the wins were hardly impressive (Southern, New Mexico State, Texas State, and Hawaii). Still, five of the losses were within one possession, including a heartbreaking 32-29 loss to Boise State at home.

With the addition of the Lobos, Pitt's non-conference schedule for 2013 is complete. Here's the schedule:

8/31: Villanova

9/14: New Mexico

10/26: at Navy

11/9: Notre Dame

Pitt will start the ACC with seven home games. My guess is that they will play their first ACC game that week in between Villanova and New Mexico. The ACC normally releases the conference schedule around the beginning of February.
