Thank God for people like Chris Peak over at Panther Lair. Chris put together a running total for all of Pitt's players under scholarship - something I don't have the time or patience to do. But it's a good look at where the Panthers stand and currently, there appear to be three open scholarships for this fall.
Of course, that could turn into four if Carl Fleming isn't invited back after his recent incident. Two guys that Peak identifies as potential recipients include fullback Mark Giubilato and Matt Yoklic.
That's not a huge surprise. After playing a bit last year as a freshman, Giubilato is poised to be the starter at fullback. Yoklic is also the starting punter and it makes sense to give scholarships to play important roles for the team. You might remember Pitt was in a similar situation last year and gave an extra scholarship to walk-on quarterback, Trey Anderson, when it was known he would be the backup. I'm all for recruiting to the max, but this is a nice way to reward non-scholarship players who earn their way not only onto the team, but to key roles.
