Pitt basketball recruiting: Panthers' target Jon Severe to announce college choice on May 22nd

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this week, I mentioned that Jon Severe was going to be trimming his list of potential colleges soon. But now, ZagsBlog says that original plan isn't going through. Instead, Severe will announce a decision on May 22nd.

It's going to be interesting to see what Pitt does. Do they push Severe for a decision sooner? The late decision could really put the team in a bind. The Panthers were hoping to add a player for the 2013 class and by late May, there could be few players of quality to pursue.

Right now, Jamel Artis is still out there, but no one really knows where he stands with Pitt. As Chas at Pitt Blather noted recently, there's been some confusion about Artis' status. Pitt could be waiting to hear from Severe first, but waiting nearly two months probably isn't what they were hoping for.

When it comes to which one is a greater position of need (Artis the small forward or Severe the guard), much will depend on what Pitt does with other players. In two seasons, the Panthers will have Durand Johnson at small forward and Cam Wright at shooting guard. But they could also move point guard Josh Newkirk to shooting guard in order to get him on the court since James Robinson will likely still be the starter at the point. The Panthers also have soon-to-be redshirt freshman Chris Jones, who could probably play either shooting guard or small forward.

And keep in mind, Pitt is pursuing 2014 shooting guard Khadeen Carrington as well. Plenty of things are up in the air at this point, so placing a priority on either due to position probably isn't all that important right now.
