Avonte Maddox commits to Pitt

Jared Wickerham

All the mid major recruits.

Just when you thought it was safe to blink, Pitt landed yet another recruit for their 2014 class. This time, it's athlete Avonte Maddox out of Detroit. That makes three for the day in case you lost count.

Maddox is rated only as a two-star by Rivals but is a three-star according to Scout. FWIW, Scout calls him the 57th best cornerback in the nation and that's also where the PG's Sam Werner says he'll play for starters. Most of his reported offers were from midcarders, but Cincinnati also offered him.

One thing you've gotta love about him? Speed, speed, speed. Rumor has it that the kid ran a sub 4.40:

One player who has been drawing a lot in interest from Central Michigan is Detroit (Mich.) King athlete Avonte Maddox, and for good reason. All it takes is a few seconds of film to see that Maddox possesses rare speed, and he is rumored to have run a 4.38 at Ohio State's camp last year. With speed like that, he may well be the fastest player in the Detroit region.

"Yeah, everyone says I am the fastest on the team," added Maddox on the claim. "I know I ran the fastest forty time at the combine, but I don't put too much into it really. I'm not the one to say if I'm the fastest player in Detroit, I just try to use my speed because I'm not that big. But that's not to say I'm not physical, I'll come hit you and I like to lay some hits as well."

That rumor's backed up a bit by Scout, that says he ran a 4.38, and he also ran a 4.42 he ran at a combine. Yeah, I'll take it.

Kid also has a little Bo Jackson/Deion Sanders thing going on. He plays baseball and it sounds like it even rivals football for his full attention. Pitt's baseball program had a great year and could always use a little more talent ... just saying.
