Big weekend ahead for Pitt volleyball team

Layne Van Buskirk 2017 Volleyball

Pitt’s fight for the ACC volleyball championship will enter a crucial stretch this weekend. The Panthers are back at home for a four-match homestand starting on Friday but will be heavily tested this weekend.

First up for Pitt will be a match against Miami. In terms of overall records, the Hurricanes are 14-4 after a sweep of North Carolina this past weekend and have the best record in the ACC.

In the conference, they sit two games behind Pitt and first place because all of the losses have come to ACC teams. But make no mistake, that will be a tough one. Pitt won the first matchup in Miami but one of the announcers during that match alluded to it being an off night for Miami and, given how well they’ve played the rest of the season, I’m inclined to agree.

Sunday, the Panthers will face Florida State. The Seminoles are a bit down this season and hovering around the middle of the pack in the ACC. But any match against them is always big and that won’t be a gimme by any stretch.

Florida State is plenty capable as an impressive earlier 3-0 win over aforementioned Miami proves. Pitt also beat Florida State earlier this season, 3-1, on the road and while I’d expect them to win that one at home, beating the Seminoles twice in a year might not be too easy.

Both matches will be televised on WatchESPN.
