Panthers wrestler Nino Bonaccorsi played a key role in No. 10 Pitt’s 18-13 upset of No. 7 Virginia Tech over the weekend, as he logged the biggest win of his career to date by defeating Hokies star Hunter Bolen in the 184-pound weight class. And for his standout performance, he was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday.

Bonaccorsi entered the matchup ranked 13th in RPI in the 184-pound class, while Bolen came in ranked first. The Bethel Park native found himself on the board first in the first period, but then fell behind 6-2 by the end of the second. But Bonaccorsi was able to force overtime with two late takedowns and an escape in the third period. He would win in the first tiebreaker with a takedown of Bolen.

The win was the 41st of Bonaccorsi’s collegiate career and his 20th this season. As for Pitt, the team victory improved the Panthers’ overall record to 10-4 and their conference record to 3-2. The team will now shift its focus to the ACC Wrestling Championship, which Pitt will host at the Petersen Events Center in March.
