Pitt-Georgetown men's soccer game canceled

The exhibition would have given Pitt a chance to face the defending champs before resuming regular-season play

The Pitt men’s soccer team was set to resume play on Saturday afternoon with an exhibition matchup against the defending national champion, Georgetown, scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. But the game was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Georgetown program.

Pitt last met Georgetown in Washington, D.C., in the second round of the 2019 NCAA tournament. In that game, the Hoyas ended the Panthers’ season with a 5-0 rout. The Hoyas went on to win a national title, and the Panthers had their own success after the loss, as they went 7-1 in 2020 and were ranked No. 1.

Georgetown did not play in 2020, and the exhibition with Pitt would have been its first game since winning the 2019 title. And for Pitt, the game would have been a potentially helpful tune-up against an elite opponent before resuming regular-season matchups.

Now, it appears Pitt’s first game of 2021 will count toward the team’s regular-season record, unless Pitt schedules a replacement exhibition game. Pitt is next scheduled to host Akron at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. ET. That game will air on ACCNX.
