Pitt volleyball team moves up to No. 2 in national rankings

Matt Hawley

The Pitt volleyball team opened up its ACC slate over the weekend and kept its perfect record intact. However, the same could not be said of Ohio State and Wisconsin, which came in at No. 3 and No. 2 last week, and as a result, Pitt rose in rank from No. 4 to No. 2 in the AVCA national rankings on Monday.

At this point, the only team ahead of Pitt in the national rankings is Texas, and the top three is rounded out by ACC rival Louisville. All three teams in the top three are undefeated, but that is certain to change, as Pitt and Louisville are set to square off on Oct. 24.

The Big Ten remains the best-represented conference in the national top 10, as it has four teams in the upper echelon of the rankings. But the ACC and Big 12 are tied for second, with two teams each. As for the top 25, the ACC has only one additional member in the rankings, aside from Pitt and Louisville, as Georgia Tech comes in at No. 18 in the latest poll.

Pitt will look to improve on its unblemished record on Wednesday night, as the team is set to host Virginia at the Fitzgerald Field House. The game will air on the ACC Network and will get underway at 8 p.m. ET.
