The ACC needs to make a move to remain in third place (behind the Big Ten and SEC) in terms of revenue, sports, etc. Meanwhile, the Pac-12(10?) is struggling just to survive. I have an idea: why not add the best of the Pac-12 remaining teams to the ACC? I'm thinking Washington, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona State, and Utah. Add Southern Methodist, too, to get the ACC Network into Texas. The new footprint map would look something like this:
20-team ACC
This would be six new teams, in six new states. It would be five "power five" schools and one - SMU - that used to be a national contender before paying recruits was legal (see NIL). It gets the ACC into California, without having to deal with California public schools (Stanford is private). It included the best West Coast football brands - some of which also play a decent game of basketball. In short, it boosts the ACC while giving a lifeline to five Pac-12 teams. It even leaves an out for Arizona and Colorado to join the Big XII - which is where those two want to go anyway.
What do you guys think: good idea or not?
