NCAA Selection Sunday: Where Does Pitt End Up?

While I think Pitt should be a No. 1 seed come Selection Sunday, the more I think about it, it might not be a lock.

Is Pitt in the driver's seat for a No. 1? Sure.

Do they deserve one? Yep.

Are they a lock? Well, I'm not so sure.

The more I think about it, the more I think Notre Dame could have a shot. What if the Irish (who also have a double bye) win the Big East tournament. And what if Pitt goes out early. We know how good Notre Dame is and with an opening game likely against UConn or Georgetown, it's not out of the question for PItt to lose its first game.

Star-divide

So under that scenario, Notre Dame and Pitt both have five losses. Notre Dame beat Pitt head to head AT Pitt. Notre Dame would also be the hotter team and have several more quality wins.

Fair is fair - if Notre Dame wins the Big East and Pitt goes out early, I'd go so far to say they deserve a No. 1 seed over Pitt.

The good news for Pitt is that maybe they could both end up with a top seed. Duke is a good team, but I'd give Pitt the nod over the Blue Devils regardless of what Duke does. Their resume is really weak when you stack it up compared to Pitt's and winning the ACC tournament shouldn't change that in my opinion. They only have two wins over teams that are currently ranked - North Carolina and Temple, while Pitt has four. And there's no comparison between the ACC and Big East.

So it's possible that Pitt doesn't grab a No. 1 seed, but I just don't see it.

The only way you guys lose the Number 1 seed...

…is if ND wins the BE tourny. Then you would be a 2 which really is the same as a 1 for practical purposes. Even if you lost early in New York, so long as ND doesn’t win the whole thing I don’t see any other team out there that would be good enough to bump you guys off the top line.

I think your second scenario is much more likely. If Notre Dame wins the Big East tournament, then they could get a number 1 seed along with Pitt. I just don’t see Pitt losing that number 1. Yeah, Notre Dame beat them, but Pitt won the toughest college basketball conference outright this year. It will be a question of whether Duke gets a number 1 seed in my opinion.
