There hasn't been a Pitt player taken in the NBA Draft the past couple of seasons, but a few Panthers are showing up on Summer League rosters.
As I mentioned last week, Ashton Gibbs was on the Nets' roster in the Orlando league. For whatever reason, though, Gibbs didn't get any playing time.
Gary McGhee was also in the league, but actually got onto the court. In four games with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he averaged 3.8 points and 2.3 rebounds a game. McGhee also shot an impressive 71% from the field in the league. It appears he'll also be playing in the Las Vegas Summer League as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers.
A third Pitt representative on a team is Brad Wanamaker, who's suiting up for the Atlanta Hawks and he's off to the best start of the three.
The guard started for the team in their first game in the Las Vegas Summer League and had 13 points and six assists.Of the three, Wanamaker might be the one with the best shot to make a roster. All three are probably long shots, but Wanamaker was impressive in the NBDL this past year and went on to help his team to the championship. If he stuck with the Hawks or another team, it would be a bit of a surprise. As well as he played in the NBDL last year, there are oodles of players with talent there. And as I wrote after his season ended, it's still going to be an uphill battle to convince a team to give him a shot.
But sometimes all it takes is an injury or suspension to get a short contract, so I wouldn't say it's impossible for him to get into the league someday.
