ACC Bowl Projections, Week of Oct. 29

New, comments

Despite the sudden fanbase optimism, Pitt is still on the outs in the latest round of bowl-game projections.

NCAA Football: Pittsburgh at Duke Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

You were asked! You voted! And according to the experts, 42% of you are wrong!

Since the last time I did this, Pitt’s situation has become somewhat less dire, moving from the bottom of the pack in the ACC to the lower middle. But the projected in/out divisions in the conference have gotten more clear, and with Pitt basically having to swing a top-fifteen upset to go bowling this year, most projections don’t see it happening. This puts Pitt in the same camp as UNC (which is already ineligible), Florida State (which is in desperation mode), and Duke (which has an easy enough remaining slate, but hasn’t won a game since mid-September). Two teams are somewhat controversial: Virginia, which needs to win one of four against Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, and Virginia Tech to go bowling; and Syracuse, which needs two wins between FSU, Wake Forest, Louisville, and Boston College. This, of course, is before we start playing around with APR rankings, which, stop.

From eight projections:

Team Record In
Clemson 7-1 8
Virginia Tech 7-1 8
Notre Dame 7-1 8
Miami 7-0 8
NC State 6-2 8
Boston College 5-4 8
Louisville 5-4 8
Wake Forest 5-3 8
Georgia Tech 4-3 8
Syracuse 4-4 6
Virginia 5-3 5
Duke 4-5 3
Pittsburgh 4-5 0
Florida State 2-5 0
North Carolina 1-8 0

Notre Dame is eligible for the ACC's bowl tie-ins and is thus included here. I've included bowl payouts (source) as a metric of the prestige of the bowl, to remind us all of the inextricable link between commerce and nominally "amateur" athletics, and because the gift suites are probably better at the nicer bowls. Bowl payouts are not included for the playoff games and selection committee bowls because they are still to be determined. I’ve included “last Pitt visit” for additional selection context. Some of these bowl projections were made before the initial College Football Playoff rankings were released, and some were published after.
