After a disappointing end to the season, Pitt will be back in action this week in the ACC Baseball Tournament. The ACC released the conference tournament bracket earlier today and the Panthers hold the No. 10 seed in this year’s tournament.
As the 10 seed, Pitt will face No. 6 North Carolina at 7 pm on Tuesday and No. 3 NC State at 7 pm on Thursday. Both can be seen on ACCNX.
After dropping their final six games, Pitt sits squarely on the bubble and desperately needs to reverse their misfortune against the Tar Heel State and push their way back in the tournament picture.
After a storybook start to the season, the Panthers showed clear signs of fatigue on the mound during the latter part of the year. With Billy Corcoran returning to the sideline with injury, Bell’s pitching staff has been pushed to its limits and will be called on again this week to perform in high-leverage situations.
While no starters have been announced just yet, we will most likely see No. 1 starter Mitch Myers will be out there on Tuesday against the Tar Heels and Matt Gilbertson on Thursday against the Wolfpack. Both will be pitching on short weeks and coming off tough outings.
Pitt has failed to make the NCAA Tournament since 1995. As they are certainly not out of the tournament conversation, these tournament games are crucial to their postseason resume.
